What’s in Your Bag?

Whether you’re crossing the board to get into the United States flying in or out of the states, customs wants to know what you’re up to. While you might not have anything in your bag of any importance, there are some ways to make this process as simple as possible. You don’t want to tick these guys off. Not only are they less likely to smile, but they are going to make your life a nightmare if you don’t follow these US:

  • Be quick with your answers – Don’t give an hour-long explanation of your trip or about the things in your bag. Just state it quickly and briefly. They want to move onto the next person in line as quickly as possible.
  • Have your passport and visa or other papers available – You don’t want to have to spend hours going through your pockets for what they need to see.
  • Don’t joke – Even if the person seems to be flirting with you, you need to keep joking to a minimum. You just want to get through this line, not make a new friend.
  • Know the limits – Before you go through customs, you should try to find out what you can bring in either direction. The rules area slightly different for exporters and importers, but even those guidelines change from time to time. Don’t be surprised by the rules when you arrive at customs.
  • Claim everything – Sure, you night forget about the ounce of weed in your shoe, but make sure you’re claiming everything possible when going through customs. Better to claim too much than to claim not enough.
